シュウ・ショイツは、テスト順位表に「コウ・シトク」という名前はいつも自分より上にあることを気づいた。なぜだ、と思わず疑問を抱いてきた。小学校5年生の時、やつと出会った日から、自分は１位から遠のき、「永遠の１位」から「万年2位」に転落した…やっと高3になって、大学にさえ入れば、もう会うことがないだろうと、心底から喜んで考えた。
学園生活を満喫していたシュウ・ショイツは、また好きな水泳部に入り、称賛を浴びる日々を送っていた。しかし、卒業前の伝統行事である新人戦でなんとコウ・シトクと再会した。ひそかに思いを寄せていた先輩に格好いいとこを見せるところが、シュウ・ショイツは痙攣でおぼれ死にかけ、コウ・シトクに救われた。恥ずかしい過ぎて死にたいと、彼は本気でそう考えた。
その後、先輩が幼馴染と付き合っていることに気づいたシュウ・ショイツは、改めて「やはり、コウ・シトクは疫病神だ」と認識した。
