作家・聶夕は、『山海経』をテーマにした展覧会を見てインスピレーションを得て、極めて東方的な色彩に満ちた都会幻想小説を書き上げた。この小説は、秘密裏に活動する民間異能組織「南山猟師（ナンシャンハンター）」に属する狂刀の聶九羅（ニエ・ジウルオ）と、陽気で正義感が強く、長年にわたり辱めを耐え忍んできた炎拓（ヤン・トゥオ）が、戦いを通じて知り合い、幾度かの命がけの協力を経て、次第に信頼と好意を抱くようになり、「地梟（ディシャオ）」という怪物に対し共に戦い、愛と平和を守り、やがて結ばれるという物語を描いている。
